SPLENDOR OF SURABAYA
Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, is the capital of East Java. This city used to be the trading hub for the illustrious inland empires of Java. Situated on the mouth of the Brantas River, today Surabaya is a modern industrial city, considered the economic and trading center of Eastern Java as well as home to the nation’s navy.
There are many version regarding the history of the name Surabaya, but the local government and historian agreed to conclude that it comes from the phrase “sura ing bhaya”, meaning “the courage to face dangers”.
When strolling around the city, you can also find the Sura and Baya monument, depicted from a folklore version about the fight between a shark and a crocodile. The story is immortalized as an iconic monument of Surabaya.
Surabaya is also known as The City of Heroes due to the epic battle happened in the city during Indonesia’s independence revolution. For visitors, highlights of the city include its submarine museum locally known as Monkasel, Monkasel is a museum literally established inside a decommissioned Russian made a submarine. It served the Indonesian navy from 1962-1990.
Hong Tiek Hian Chinese Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in Surabaya, was built by Tatar troops during the Mojopahit era of the kingdom. This religious place is visited by many people and there is a daily Pho Tee Hi Wayang show with Chinese stories. The temple is located near Chinatown on Jl. Dukuh (North Surabaya).
The Majapahit Hotel was the scene of the famous “Hotel Yamato Incident”. On September 19, 1945, pro-nationalist Indonesian youth revolutionaries tore the blue part of the Dutch flag from the hotel to change it to the red and white Indonesian flag in advance of the Battle of Surabaya. You also have the opportunity to tour the hotel and take a coffee break.
To cool off from the city’s heat, come by to Zangrandi. Another legendary icons of Surabaya, this ice cream parlor was established in 1930 by an Italian named Roberto Zangrandi. With its original recipe, the crowd’s favorite menus are Tutti Fruti, Banana Split, and Soda ice cream.

Visit HONG TIEK HIAN Chinese temple
A very holy Chinese Buddhist temple, the Klenteng Hong Tiek Hian is a historical temple of Surabaya showcasing the rich history and culture of the city. The temple reminds of the strong Chinese influence in Indonesia in the pre-historic times.
Known as Surabaya’s oldest temple, Klenteng Hong Tiek Hian temple is located in the heart of Surabaya’s China Town and oozes old-world Chinese charm. The vibrant red tapestries that hang all over the temple married with the strong smell of incense wafting through its ancient courtyard create a very atmospheric and holy feel. The temple is also famous for its Wayang Potehi, or puppet show, that is typical of the Chinese community and distinct from the Wayang Kulit puppet show of the Balinese.

Visit Pabean traditional market
The Pasar Pabean is one of the oldest and most traditional markets of Indonesia, lying in the vicinity of the eastern Surabaya. You can spend your time shopping for some local vegetables, fruits and fresh seafood here. Housed inside an old-fashioned yellow building, it was once known to be the only link between the Chinese and the Arab quarters.
Pasar Pabean is a unique sprawling little market where can buy almost everything from Madurese chicken to Chinese crockery. The market is a bustling mix of different vendor’s stall which is covered with the scent of seafood, different kinds of produce and some catchy knick knacks.
